The winter months go by quickly in Phoenix, and already it’s time to start thinking about pulling out the clothing meant for the warmer days of spring. If it seems as though you just put your heavier items in your closet, you might be dreading the upcoming wardrobe switch. If you do it gradually, however, switching for the seasons can be hassle- and stress-free. Here are some tips on making the most of your wardrobe as we head into spring.
Think Light and Bright
As the spring flowers begin blooming, so should your wardrobe! The desert nights and early mornings will be chilly for a while yet, so when deciding what you should pack away and what should stay in your closet, consider putting up the navy, dark green, brown and black sweaters and jackets. Keep the ones that are lighter or brighter. This way, you can pair a pink, yellow or purple sweater with a pair of light slacks to keep you warm while adding some color to your day and a spring to your step.
Consider Your Footwear
It’s not quite time for sandals just yet, but heavy boot season is over. Loafers, tennis shoes and other season-neutral footwear is perfect for this in-between time. If it looks too summery (strappy sandals, Birkenstocks, white ballerina flats or flip-flops, for example), leave it packed away. On the other hand, if it’s something you’d wear thick socks with or you wear them to keep your toes warm, it might be time to put them away.
Accessorize!
If the weather is a little too cool for some of your spring favorites one day, dress up a plain winter outfit with some floral, bright or otherwise spring-ish accessories. A bright-colored scarf, a chunky necklace in a bright color, or a floral bag will make you look absolutely appropriate for the season.
Pack Clothing Away Correctly
As you gradually pack away your clothing, it’s important to do so correctly to avoid having your clothes damaged as they sit until next winter. It would be terrible to open up your storage containers to find that you’ve had moths eating your wool sweaters or that moisture has caused some of your clothes to mildew. Here are a few tips:
- Make sure everything is completely clean and dry
Even if you’ve worn an item just for a few hours, rewash it before packing it away. Also, have jackets dry-cleaned. Check pockets, too, to be sure that you didn’t leave a piece of gum or anything else that might attract creepy crawlies. - Use cedar or lavender to repel moths and other bugs
Mothballs will work, of course, but they’ll leave everything smelling, well, like mothballs. There are much more pleasant-smelling options out there! Now might be the perfect time to have a cedar closet installed; talk to your custom closet designer about this! - Choosing plastic bins over cardboard is better to keep insects out
Make sure your bins are not airtight, though, as this can allow humidity to build up even if it’s not humid in your storage area.
