When you have a custom closet installed in your home, or even if you DIY, you have several choices of materials that can be used. Every type comes with its pros and cons, so let’s go through the most common closet materials to help you make the best decision.
Wire Closets
If you are looking for the most budget-friendly option, wire might be right for you. This is usually the most inexpensive type. Another positive is that when you have wire closets, you can look up and see very easily what is on overhead shelves.
There are some drawbacks, however. Remember that you do get what you pay for: Wire may be cheap, but it’s also difficult to customize and it cannot bear heavy loads. Also, the ease of seeing what’s above you can backfire if something were to spill; whether it’s a container of beads or a bottle of syrup (in a pantry), it will pour down on whatever is underneath.
Wood Closets
Wood is easy to cut to measure and it can bear heavier loads than wire closets. There are a few different ways to install wood in the closet, so it’s also easy to customize. It comes in various finishes, so if whether you’re considering a light pine or a dark mahogany, you can probably find the one you want. There are also less expensive options available, including plywood and particleboard.
Wood can be expensive, which may be a concern. Also, unless you have it specially treated, spills and moisture can cause it to warp or stain. Wood is also difficult to work with if you are installing your closet yourself and do not have the tools or experience necessary.
Melamine and Wood
At L&B Custom Closets , we use melamine-coated wood in most of our closets and other storage areas. Why? We feel that this is the best material in terms of value. Yes, it’s more expensive than wire, but it also stands up to heavy use and will not warp, bend or shift, creating holes in your walls. It is also humidity- and stain-resistant, which gives it a leg up when compared to regular wood. It comes in many different finishes and you can use different combinations to achieve various looks.
The drawbacks are that it can be pricy for some and also that it is heavy. This type of material is difficult for you to install yourself, and is best installed by a professional.
If you are ready to take the step of scheduling your FREE in-home consultation, we’d be happy to talk to you about the benefits of melamine-coated wood. We can also show you samples and create a custom design that you can look at in the privacy and convenience of your own home.
